Yesterday, Vevo premiered the trailer for Mary J. Blige's upcoming project, The London session
The icon R&B songstress traveled to London in the Summer 2014 to record her 13th album (wow). Wanting to do something different for her upcoming project, Mary took a trip "across the pond" and hooked up with some of UK's top R&B/Soul musicians and producers!

The music from the trailer pique's my interest (especially the bluesy tune)! Hey, if a trip away from what you usually know can bring out creativity, I'm all for it!

A release date is not set for The London Session's but the album and documentary is coming soon!

Get to know the "real" Wilson Pickett on TV One's Unsung (Full Episode)

$

As I patiently wait for TV One to release my favorite shows a week after their preview (why, TV One why...), I finally got a chance to check out the previous episode of Unsung featuring former Stax soulful funk and R&B singer known for his howling high notes and his energetic performances, Wilson Pickett.

Now before I get into this post further, I have to be honest. Whenever I hear Wilson Pickett's name, the first thing that comes to mind is not his music, but the Martin Lawrence show when he told Pam "her hair was so nappy Wilson couldn't pick it" (I know I'm not the only one)!

Now I came clean about that, let me share some interesting highlights of this very poignant documentary series that focused on Wilson Pickett's career from his hit records (Mustang Sally, Midnight hour and more) to his troubled personal life!

- Born and raised in Pratville Alabama Wilson Pickett was determined to be self made and at the age of 14 years old he decided to further his musical inspirations in Detroit Michigan where he joined his first group the Voilinaires!

- Known for his 1966 hit The Midnight Hour, Pickett stated the song was inspired by gospel, but you know Mr. Pickett had to add his soulful flair to the classic track!

- Alternatively known as The Wicked Wilson Pickett for his demeanor and love of guns!  He allegedly got in an argument with a member of Hell's Angel and he got stabbed in the head (ouch). According to Unsung, Wilson was mad at the stabbing incident, he was upset because he bled in his car (huh)!

-The howling Soul singer music transcending across the nation and eventually the global. While performing for a show in the Southern States, a Caucasian women was dancing the Funky Broadway onstage and it cause an altercation between Pickett and the cops!

- In 1967, Wilson Pickett teamed up with Bobby Womack and they wrote 17 songs which Pickett also performed, including the hit song The Midnight Mover!

- Wilson Pickett felt some type of way that his room was smaller than his label mate Elvis, Wilson said some bad choice words about Elvis! According to Pickett's long time companion Dovie Hall, Elvis security team, The Memphis Mafia kicked down Pickett's door and threaten him!

Wow, Wilson Pickett story needs to be big screen (Chadwick Bosman, where you at)! Although his personal life was interesting and chaotic at the same time, the way he captured a crowd with his powerful and soulful voice is undeniable (which earned him the 1991 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction- and that was filled with drama as well)! Check out the full episode of TV One's Unsung that also features commentary from Wilson Pickett, his family and close friends!

New Soul music from the Queen Mary J. Blige- Whole Damn Year

Mary released her second single from her upcoming album The London Sessions title Whole Damn Year! The emotionally gripping soulful song take you back to MJB's  glory days where she was the queen of "damn this relationship is got me going through it" music!

The lyrical content for Whole Damn Year describes the emotional roller-coaster of a failed relationship that took five years to get into and a year more to get her mental and spiritual together!

I heart Whole Damn Year, from the mellow beat to the lyrics.... Wait, do I hear Sam Smith on the hook? Let me know if I am right or not!

Check out the song and share your thoughts on Mary's new track!

RnB Divas in Puerto Rico

Now its time to say goodbye, to all our R&B Divas of LA... Well, I tried to remix the Mickey Mouse Club song, but y'all get the idea! On this episode of R&B Divas LA, the divas performed in Puerto Rico for Carnival - a time for fun and celebration, but the divas was more engulfed with drama... Check out some highlights of the show followed by my thoughts on this season of R&B Divas!

Lil Mo took it there and beyond: Chante, Chrisette and Lil Mo took a trip to the rain forest, but things went left real quick when Chante was not being "real" with Chrisette and Lil Mo! Lil Mo went from 5 to ten real quick and caught the "ghost" in the rain forest! She laid down the verbal law on Chante and threaten to throw her off the cliff and then ask her why is she wearing a bikini in the rain forest! Were they really there to walk in the rain forest and play face or was it a set-up (just asking)?

The divas outperformed at the Carnival: Regardless of the drama, the divas came through for Puerto Rico Carnival and set out to do what they do- sang! The way they performed you would have never thought it was tension among the group!

The divas last supper: All the R&B Divas concluded their musical journey with dinner and the main course was Chante Moore! The divas was at the table bickering about the tension among the group and it got so bad that Chrisette and Claudette was in a verbal exchange while Lil Mo got up to pray numerous times...

My thoughts on the show...

I'm going to make this real quick! This season was not bad at all as it brought more music (that's a plus) and two new cast mates (Chrisette and Leela) that gave more life to the show! But I got to be honest, Chante Moore was this season's Kelly Price. Yes, I said it! Chante name was the on the tip of most divas tongue lashing due to "not keeping it real" and making insensitive comments (which can be misconstrued)! Ladies, talk it out and/or hug it out!

Check out the full episode of R&B Divas LA and share your thoughts on this show (and the whole season)! Also, get ready for part one of the reunion hosted by none other, Wendy Williams

I can't stop listening to Omar Lye-Fook's - The Man

While researching for my previous post on Siji's latest EP, I had a "Pandora" moment (looking for one person leads you to other people)! As I was familiarizing myself with Boddhi Satva music, I found out he did a song African based dance song with Omar titled Benefit. I instantly said to myself  "What's going on with Omar"as if he is a distance cousin that I have not seen in awhile! I had to continue my Pandora research on the man, Mr. Lye-Fook...

UK singer Omar Lye-Fook MBE has blessed the world with his unique, soulful vocals and truthful tunes for over 20 years! The London born veteran Soul crooner has released seven albums, featured on numerous songs and have worked fellow musicians such as Stevie Wonder, Estelle, Angie Stone, Common and more..

I listened to Omar's latest album The Man (2013) and I loves it (yeah I said it). The song I can't stop listening to from the album is the title track The Man! The smooth soulful jazz beat + the honest coming of age lyrics= another Omar hit! Another plus I love about The Man is the video! The video is simplistic and drives the point of the song (also features his family)!

Check out the video and if you have yet to listen to The Man, check it out here!

Calvin Richardson- I Am Calvin

Veteran R&B/soul singer Calvin Richardson released his 6th album titled I am Calvin. The ten track album is 2014 gem that you must get! Beside the fact I love the WHOLE album, their are a few tracks worth mentioning such as the sensual We Gon' Love Tonite that features a suitable a sample of Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing! Calvin range of music also got tunes for Blues lovers such as Dark side of Love and I'll Take Care of You! Calvin also sung The Debarge's All This Love! Although he put the "Calvin Richard's" touch on the song, I'm still in love with the original!

Elijah Blake- Drift

Def Jam latest R&B Elijah Blake released his debut EP simply titled Drift! The 8 track EP is filled with R&B, Soul and ballads from the talented 23 year old artist! Elijah Blake pay homage to classic hip-hop on the following songs; Strange Fruit, hook is similar to Outkast's elevators and Come away features the A Tribe Called Quest's Find My Way! A unique song that gives me the chills is 6! The song describes how a turbulant life of a 6 year old effects his relationships as a grown man! Yes, Drift is an EP you can listen to without skipping a song!

24 Hour Replay: Prince + 3RDEYEGIRL- ART OFFICIAL AGE + PLECTRUMELECTRUM Album Release Party at Paisley Park Studios (Video)

Yesterday was not only the day that Prince Rogers Nelson released two new albums, but he also had a live album release party at his famous Paisley Park Studios! The album release party was streamed live courtesy of Yahoo Screen! The concert started a few minutes late (not Lauryn Hill late) with a host (I'm sorry I did not catch her name, but she is Prince's photographer) who took viewers on a tour around Paisley Park Studios!

Although I was anxiously waiting for Prince to perform, the tour did give some behind the scenes on what Prince is cooking in the studio, and his band 3RDEYEGIRL!

An hour later, the tour came to an end and Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL started to perform! I have to give props to 3RDEYEGIRL, especially drummer Hannah Ford who was getting busy on the drums!
After a quick break, someone came on the stage and started rapping! I'm thinking to myself "This dude looks familiar, what is that Kendrick Lamar?" and oh I was right!
The next performance featured Prince's protege and NPG songstress Liv Warfield, I live for Liv's voice! The performance was lively, but for us viewers in a different time zone watching the live feed, that was the last performance for our viewing pleasure!

I love me some Prince but they could have showed one or two more live performances yesterday as I was fighting sleep to see him perform! It's cool, maybe I will be one of the lucky few to catch a glimpse of Prince performing live at Paisley Park or another location!

Check out the 24 hour replay of the album release party via Yahoo Screen (sorry, due to privacy licences, I cannot embed the video on my site) and share your thoughts in the comment section!

Aretha Franklin goes to church on Adele's Rolling in the Deep

The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin recently had the internet abuzz as she boldly performed her rendition of  UK songstress Adele's 2010 hit tune Rolling in the Deep (from her 21 album) at the David Letterman Show! The Queen of Soul was singing for her life in her periwinkle strapless ball gown! Although Momma Aretha voice was a little pitchy (I don't know if that was intentional or not) when she hit some notes, but she quickly recovered!

Also, I like that Momma Aretha put her own gospel spin on Rolling In The Deep! At the end of the tune, she started singing Motown's iconic female trio The Temptations Ain't No Mountain High Enough as the the background singers was intertwining Rolling In The Deep melody! At the end of her performance, Ms. Franklin got standing ovation (I know that's right Queen)!

At 72 years young, Aretha showed us that there is no limit to talent and yes, she can still sang! According to Rolling Stone, Ms. Franklin is releasing a new album Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics that features covers from the talented songstress such as Adele's Rolling in the Deep, Alicia Key's No One, Sinéad O’Connor's Nothing Compare 2 U (I love that song, I can't wait to hear her rendition) and more...

Check out the video below and tell me if Aretha did it the thing or she betta not ever do it again!

Watch it again- Wendy gets real with the R&B Divas LA (Reunion Show Part 1)

After a busy week, I finally watched part one of R&B Divas LA reunion show (so late right..). I would love to post part deux as well but due to TV One rules and regulations, you will have to wait until next week.. But during a cold, windy night in the city, the reunion show was what I needed to keep me warm and my laughing as some of sites and sounds of the divas and more...

Wendy Williams returned as the ringleader  hostess with the mostess for the R&B Divas LA reunion show! All six ladies appeared on the show, dressed to the ten's and it was not short of drama and a bodyguard! Check out a few highlights from the reunion show:

  • Chante Moore looked stunning as always but her character was called out too many times on the show! If you watched the previous episodes, Chante, Lil Mo, Leela James and Chrisette Michelle all joined together for  Chante's Ladies Anthem! Against the three divas better judgement, and recorded the song! Due to Chante's hood contracts, the ladies was not feeling the song! On the reunion show, Chante revealed she released the song without the other diva's vocals!
  • Wendy Williams asked Lil Mo about her current martial status and she stated she is divorce but she is dating her Philly boxer boo! Then Wendy went a little further with the questions and asked if Lil Mo is still into girls (on a previous episode, Lil Mo revealed she had a threeway including her ex-husband and a female), but Lil Mo stated that was just a one time thing!
  • The ladies reveal more about Chante's behavior on and off camera as  Leela "I keeps it real" James told the story of how Chante confronted her off camera and stated Leela don't say nothing to her while they are not filming while waving her fingers in her face (where I'm from, you are asking for a beat down)!
  • Fellow blogger and YouTube extraordinaire Funky Dineva gave the "tea" on the ladies! Dineva Ross wanted to know where was Claudette getting her money from because she had not had a hit since City High! She also asked Leela James to flat iron her hair (which I disagree because her fro looks good on her). Most importantly, Funky Dineva gave praise to Michel'le for being brave by sharing her story of her mental health issues!
I actually thought reunion show was OK, messy but OK! The ladies did not hold back and Wendy Williams did not either! Also, before an argument became too much, Wendy Williams shut it down real quick! But what I found hilarious (besides Funky Dineva commentary) was that Chante brought a man to the set, a bodyguard! Check out the full episode of R&B Divas LA reunion and tell me what diva you thought looked amazing!

When you listen to You're Dead, each track drags you into it's own story filled with experimental sounds infused with Soul, Jazz, Electronica, & Hip-Hop from Fly Lo and features vocals from K. Dot (Never Catch Me), Snopp Dogg (Dead Man's Tetris- actually features the Tetris sound), Captain Murphy and more.. If you person who loves to chill, love beats and want to listen to abstract art, You're Dead is for you!

Ms. Keyshia Cole  released her new album titled Point of No Return today! The 13 track album gives you that reminisce of Keyshia's The Way It Is album (my heart is hurting because of you type of music). Point of No Return is an album that is for an mature audience who has been through the ups , but mostly downs in a relationship(s) (who can't relate)! The lyrical content is raw, honest and a whole lot of cussing (yes, that Parental Advisory sign is on the album cover for there for a few reasons)! Tracks that are earworthy are: Intro (Last Tango), Next Time (Won't Give My Heart Away) and Believer (baby making track)! If you want to release and let go from a crazy relationship and need a soundtrack, this album is for you!

New music video: Flying Lotus x Kendrick Lamar- Never Catch Me

I was going to post the audio video for Flying Lotus's Never Catch Me (featuring Kendrick Lamar) awhile ago, but thanks to Vevo I discovered the music video for the track (procrastination is not always bad)!

The first three words that come to mind when I watched video for Never Catch Me were; thought provoking, artistic, and joyous!

Directed by Hiro Murai the video begins in a church (you can see Fly Lo briefly sitting with his head down) for a funeral for two children. While the people are in mourning, the two children (a boy and a girl) rise up from the caskets and start to dance rapidly towards the song in coordinated dance steps! As the children run around the church with glee and make their way outside, they continue to dance and make their way to the hearse which they ride off to into the sunset!

Check out Never Catch Me video and share your thoughts on the video in the comment section below! Also, if you are in the Philly area, Fly Lo and Thundercat will be performing at The Tower Theater on October 14. For more information, visit The Tower Theater website!
